I see that Amazon’s e-reader the Kindle is now available through South African electronic retailer Digital Planet with 24 hour delivery.

They say that the normal retail price for the Kindle is R 3 189 incl VAT but they are offering it on sale for R 2349 incl VAT while stocks last.

In November I bought my wife the Amazon Kindle reading device for her birthday and it has quite simply been a hit with her!

I’ve been surprised at how few South Africans know about the Kindle so I thought I’d give it a bit of a plug and try and encourage other people to invest in one.

Basically the Kindle is a tablet PC roughly the size of a book. It comes with an internet connection which allows users to connect to Amazon in the US.

Basically you as the reader then have the option to download any book you wish from the Amazon store (depending on what is licensed for your country). The book comes up on the screen and you can read it.

For those worried about reading small text off a screen, you can adjust the size to suit your requirements. 

When you’ve finished reading the book you can either delete it, save it to a PC or leave it on the Kindle and promptly go back to the Amazon shop and buy a new one.

My wife has so far downloaded the two latest books from Steig Larsson, Patricia Cornwell and Faye Kellerman and read them one after the other. There is no waiting for books to arrive in local stores, you can just download them online and for cheaper than the books would cost you to buy in the shops.

For instance the three bestsellers she has bough recently for between R70 – R90. This compares to between R150 and R200 in the shops.  

They are a little price at just over R2000 including all the input costs but as you can see from the saving, you can make it up quite quickly.

For her, it has also given her access to a lot of text books that she uses at the university and she can download them at the click of a button.

All in all the Kindle has proven to be an awesome present for her and I definately will be trying to get my hands on one in the next few months!
